August

It's neither the heat
nor the humidity
that  leaves  a haze
in the afternoon sky.
It's not the pollen, or dust,
or even the tears
in your eye
as you watch Summer
begin to pack her bags.
It's the memories
of this and every August past
 hanging thick in the air,
 clouding your vision,
softening the edges
of your disappointment.
